ABOUT JOEL
Joel Clayton Lewis is a native of Leslie County, where the people, landscapes, and traditions of Appalachia have shaped both his life and his artwork. By profession, Joel works as an electrician in the coal industry, but outside of work he turns to art as a way to relax, reflect, and reconnect with his creativity. Drawing has become more than a hobby—it is a therapeutic outlet that allows him to slow down and capture the beauty of the region he calls home.
Working primarily with pencil on poster paper, Joel creates detailed, hand-drawn pieces that celebrate the character of Appalachian life. His artwork features weathered homes, vintage automobiles, landscapes, and still-life scenes, each reflecting the rustic, quiet beauty of southern Kentucky. Through careful attention to detail, he preserves everyday moments, occasionally adding a pop of color to bring his compositions to life. Although Joel's only formal art education came through high school art classes, he developed his skills largely through years of self-teaching, patience, and practice. His dedication to continually improving his craft is evident in every piece he creates.
After stepping away from drawing for roughly 15 years, Joel rediscovered his passion for art following his marriage to his wife, Villa. Her unwavering encouragement and belief in his talent inspired him to pick up the pencil once again and pursue the creative work he had long set aside. With her support, Joel has continued creating original works that not only fulfill his own passion but also allow others to experience and appreciate the rich heritage of Appalachia through his eyes.
When he isn't working or creating, Joel enjoys another role that is especially close to his heart: “PaJoe.” He treasures spending time with his grandchildren, making family and the simple moments shared with the people he loves an important part of his life. That same appreciation for family, home, and the everyday beauty of southeastern Kentucky is reflected throughout his artwork. Today, Joel continues to create one-of-a-kind original drawings and fine art prints, sharing his love for southeastern Kentucky with collectors and admirers who appreciate authentic Appalachian craftsmanship and the stories behind each piece.
